Gemma’s background is in physics, with a particular interest in particle and quantum physics. Prior to joining EIP, she completed a DPhil and postdoctoral fellowship on the search for the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland.
Gemma’s patent work covers a diverse array of technical fields. Examples include: software, AI, photonics, electronics, telecommunications (including quantum communication) and mechanical devices. She has extensive experience in display technologies including quantum dots, holography, electrowetting and microfluidics.
Her practice is focused on original drafting and prosecution work. She particularly enjoys working directly with clients to obtain high quality patent protection for complex technology.
Gemma is well placed to provide strategic patenting advice to businesses, having gained valuable knowledge of the commercial considerations in building, managing and enforcing a substantial patent portfolio during a secondment to the in-house patents department of a telecommunications multinational.
Gemma also has experience of contentious matters, including patent litigation before the UK High Court alongside the EIP Legal team and opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office.
Experience
- Secondment to the in-house IP department of a FTSE-100 telecoms client
- Align Technologies v ClearCorrect. Provided litigation support to the EIP Legal team, who acted for ClearCorrect in its defence against alleged infringement of four of Align’s medical device patents. The dispute between the parties in the UK was settled after the exchange of expert evidence.
- Good Technology v MobileIron and AirWatch. Provided litigation support to the EIP Legal team, who acted for Good Technology Inc., on issues of infringement arising in UK High Court patent proceedings involving mobile device management and security patents. (link)
