Thomas Goodfellow

Thomas has experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the fields of (thermo)fluid dynamics, mechanical engineering, electronics and robotics, and computer systems, in particular in relation to medical devices, HVAC systems, aerospace and automotive systems, marine technologies, and various consumer devices. Thomas is also a fully qualified European and UK patent attorney who enjoys discussing interesting technology, getting to know his clients’ commercial goals, and making sure the right protection is put into place. This includes building a solid foundation with a well-drafted patent application, adjusting the direction of applications as potential infringers emerge, and defending rights from third-party attack at the EPO.

Thomas has an academic background in mathematics and engineering and joined EIP having studied for a PhD in Applied Mathematics, specialising in Fluid Dynamics at the University of Leeds. Thomas has experience in fields ranging from data centra cooling to jet car aerodynamics, and from coastal engineering to the study of astrophysical magnetic fluids in planets and stars. He also has broader patenting experience in various (electro)mechanical and software technologies including: gaming robots, manufacturing lines, electric vehicle battery and charging technology, vehicle crash detection, and vehicle drivetrain and suspension systems

Thomas’ PhD project focussed on pattern formation in astrophysical and geophysical fluid systems, in which he developed simplified mathematical models of complex fluid flow patterns. Thomas also completed a Master’s degree in Fluid Dynamics at the University of Leeds where he designed and built a ‘wave tank’ to demonstrate the impact of coastal defences on flooding. The wave tank is currently being used by a large environmental consultant company to determine solutions to flooding for the UK Environment Agency.
