Experienced IP attorney Darren Smyth joined EIP on 2 January 2012 as Partner and head of a new practice group, branded EIP Elements™.

Darren has more than a decade of experience in private practice and was previously a Partner at a major IP firm. He specialises in chemistry, pharmaceuticals, and food ingredients.

Darren brings considerable expertise, in particular his experience of opposition and appeal hearings at the EPO. He has advised on patent litigation in the UK and other European countries. He has acted in a number of patent litigation and opposition cases in recent years.

The EIP Elements practice group is another major development for the firm, following the launch in October 2011 of an IP litigation practice, EIP Legal™, led by IP lawyer Gary Moss.

The new practice builds on the firm’s strength in TMT (Technology, Media and Telecommunications), and the new chemistry practice joins other centres of excellence in digital, life sciences and pharmaceuticals. Darren Smyth is the fourth partner to join EIP recently, and the twelth partner in total.

“The appointment of a seasoned and respected attorney like Darren Smyth is always exciting,” says Partner Jerome Spaargaren “and his expertise in pharmaceuticals and his knowledge of the chemistry sector will get our new practice off to a flying start.”
