Partner Darren Smyth chaired a lecture for CIPA members on Japanese Patent Law and Practice in biotechnology and pharmaceutical technology on 17 April.

The lecture took place at CIPA in Chancery Lane, London, and was led by Ayako Kobayashi, a Japanese qualified patent attorney from TMI Associates in Tokyo.

Subjects covered included recent trends of examination of biotech inventions at the Japan Patent Office, the patent term extension (PTE) system in Japan and the recent reform of the JPO Examination Guidelines on PTE concerning last year’s Supreme Court decision.
