An EIP webinar for CIPA members on patenting of computer-implemented inventions (CII) has received a positive review in the CIPA Journal.

Matt Lawman and Robert Squibbs’ talk was part of a series of CIPA webinars entitled ‘IP Outside your Comfort Zone’ aimed at updating patent attorneys in those areas where they don’t routinely work.

The webinar looked at patenting of CII, and Matthew and Robert endeavoured to provide an effective overview of such a complex subject in the hour allocated.

They outlined the types of protection available, and recent developments in case law, including US law and case law relevant to this technical area, using a number of practical examples to illustrate their points. The webinar was well attended by CIPA members and a number of examiners from the UK Patent Office.

The November 2011 issue of the CIPA Journal dedicated three pages to reviews by two members who participated in the webinar.

Triona Walshe, of MacLachlan & Donalson (Ireland) Limited, said: “The webinar was packed with useful extracts from relevant case law and provided those non-experts amongst us with sufficient information to ease us into a somewhat more ‘comfortable zone’ when dealing with CII inventions.”

Simon Hill, from BP, said: “The information provided helped in the understanding of the principles of what constitutes patentable subject-matter in this field of technology and also gave an overview in the development of the significant case law in the UK, EPO and US.”
