David is a UK and European Patent Attorney with a background in electrical engineering focusing on telecoms, wireless technology and Standard Essential Patents (SEPs). He regularly works as part of the litigation team for projects in the UK and Germany, including in multi-jurisdictional cases. He assists clients in drafting and reviewing claim charts, assessing patents for standards essentiality and validity, and advising on ongoing prosecution for patents which may be candidates for litigation.
David joined EIP after four years at a large UK IP firm as Technical Assistant where he prosecuted and drafted applications in fields including mobile communications and machine-to-machine / internet-of-things (M2M/IoT) systems. David is well placed to advise clients on the Unified Patent Court (UPC).
David has over ten years’ experience participating in 3GPP representing Siemens, Nokia Siemens Networks, and BlackBerry and is a named inventor on a number of patents relating to wireless communications.
At BlackBerry, David managed the development of its standards essential patent (SEP) portfolio, from invention disclosure review and patent filing approval to claim chart drafting and support to the licensing team. He led an international team of subject matter experts who represented BlackBerry at 3GPP and other international standards organisations.
At Stanford University, David was a Teaching Assistant for courses on internet and wireless communication standards and developed the first course there on wireless LAN (IEEE 802.11) standards. His research focussed on IEEE 802.11 protocols and multimedia applications.
