Jonathan joined EIP having spent 13 years in the IP department at Canon Europe. He has a strong technical and legal background in the computer-implemented inventions field and is adept at supporting the launch of new products through patent filing and clearance activities. Jonathan is well placed to advise clients on the new Unified Patent Court (UPC) - see further details at EIP Amar, our alliance created to support clients in any litigation before the UPC.
At EIP Jonathan has primarily been engaged with patent prosecution work before various patent offices for several large clients. He has gained significant experience working on inventions relating to machine learning and cryptography.
At Canon Jonathan was responsible for the management of work originating from Canon group companies located in Europe in technology areas including software for print servers, document management, network video camera surveillance, and cloud-based photo-sharing.
Jonathan has considerable experience in oral proceedings before the examining divisions and boards of appeal at the EPO and has experience of opposition proceedings, including leading a team of attorneys before the board of appeal.
Jonathan has a master’s degree in Theoretical Physics and Applied Mathematics from the University of Birmingham and completed IP Litigation and Advocacy courses at Nottingham Trent University where he was awarded the Hogarth Chambers prize for the highest mark. Since 2013 Jonathan has mentored students on the Masters in Management of Intellectual Property course at Queen Mary University of London.
