As a UK and European Patent Attorney and Registered US Patent Agent based in EIP’s US office, Matt has a key role at EIP advising clients on international patent strategies.
Matt’s technical background allows him to advise on patent matters in a wide range of engineering and digital technologies. He holds a master’s degree in Natural Sciences (focusing on experimental and theoretical physics) from the University of Cambridge. As part of his master’s degree, he took specialist courses in information theory and biophysics.
During his 16 years in private practice, Matt has developed particular technical expertise in inkjet printing, 3D printing, image and video processing, computer networking, robotics, medical imaging, and medical devices.
Matt has extensive experience of all stages of the patent life-cycle, having drafted and prosecuted patent applications in numerous jurisdictions (including Europe, the US, China, Japan, India, Canada and Australia), and having advised clients on the licensing and enforcement of their patents. Matt is also experienced in filing and prosecuting registered designs and in devising strategies for protecting consumer electronics devices using a combination of registered designs and patents.
Matt has been lead counsel in EPO Oppositions and Appeals, and has advised clients on patent infringement and validity matters in the UK and the US. Recently, Matt played a key role in assessing the strength of a client’s patent position in both Europe and the US, to assist the client in developing a patent assertion strategy targeting a competitor.
