Geoff has more than 20 years of experience in international patent prosecution, having held senior positions in both private practice and in-house.
Geoff is regularly involved in litigation matters in the UK, Germany and internationally, as well as the drafting and reviewing of claim charts to support commercial negotiation. Geoff has considerable experience in assessing patent rights for essentiality and validity in relation to telecoms standards.
Prior to joining EIP, Geoff was IP Manager at a New Zealand-based start-up which went on to be acquired by Apple Inc. He has also worked in the patent departments of both Ericsson and Nortel Networks in the UK.
Geoff’s background has given him a strategic approach to patent portfolio management. Clients value his advice through first-hand experience of developing and executing an IP strategy to exit, licensing, joint ventures, budgeting, and the enforcement of rights.
Geoff’s main technical area of expertise is electrical engineering where he has extensive knowledge in telecommunications including mobile phones, wireless technologies, and optical networks; inductive power transfer; digital audio processing; video compression; medical imaging; software and communications, and has advised on the procurement, licensing and litigation of standards-essential patents of related technologies.
As well as a UK and European Patent Attorney, Geoff is also qualified in Australia and New Zealand. He attended the University of Auckland, New Zealand, where he received a Bachelor of Engineering (Electronics and Electrical), and a Bachelor of Arts (Philosophy and Political Studies).
